Using Respondus LockDown Browser in the Classroom
Respondus LockDown Browser can be used to deliver online exams within Moodle, in the classroom. Instructors can administer online exams in the classroom where students will use their own device.
LockDown Browser (LDB) will:
- Lock assessments in full-screen and cannot be minimized.
- Remove browser menu and toolbar options, except for Back, Forward, Refresh and Stop.
- Prevents access to other applications including messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machines, and remote desktops.
- Disable printing and screen capture functions.
- Prevent copying and pasting anything to or from an assessment.
- Disable right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts, and task switching.
LockDown Browser Requirements and Limitations:
- Students must have a broadband internet connection.
- Students must use a Windows or Mac computer with a compatible operating system. iPads may be allowed by instructors. Linux is not a supported platform.
- Students who do not have a laptop may be able to borrow one from the Libraries. See the Libraries’ Technology Services page for more information.
- Students must be able to download and install the Respondus LockDown Browser. (This will happen the first time they open a Quiz with Respondus LockDown
- Browser enabled or they may download Respondus LockDown Browser using this pre-configured link).
- Respondus Lockdown Browser cannot be run on a virtual machine, this will not work with the NC State Virtual Computing Lab (our campus’s virtual computing environment).
- Not all screen readers are supported by Respondus LockDown Browser, but NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver are all supported.
- Limits on allowable materials cannot be enforced (e.g., number of pages of notes).
- Respondus LockDown Browser can only prevent the use of applications on the device where the student is taking the exam. The use of other devices is unaffected.
- Instructors are responsible for activating and configuring Respondus LockDown Browser in Moodle.
